dsc_0200-2So I might not be an American nor do I get a public holiday, but I can still appreciate, remember, celebrate and acknowledge; the man, the Christian, the leader, the nonviolent civil rights activist and the great; that was Martin Luther King. As a child I was told about Martin Luther King Jr and his movement from a young age (at home); I was told about his honour, his persona, his heart, his fight (non physical of course) and most of all; I was told about his DREAM.

Ironically with this week’s agenda; Friday 20th Jan 2017 in particular (Trump’s inauguration *shakes head*); my next point is somewhat invalid. However, lets not forget that for the last 8 year – Yes, 2 Terms- we’ve had a black man in the White House. The leader of the Free World was an African-American. The President of the United States (again, for eight years) was a man of colour. For that we owe more than just thanks or a single day to remember Martin Luther King. Without great leaders like MLK we would not be as we are today.

In 2011 the MLK memorial was built and opened to the public. Lucky for me I was not only in the U.S at the time but I also happened to go to Washington D.C. Thus, I had the pleasure of visiting such amazing and deeply touching memorial- so today I dug this [pictured] out to share!

Although celebrated on the third Monday of Jan (to accommodate your typical public holiday), King’s birthday is actually on the 15th (yesterday) – Happy belated birthday Martin Luther King Jr!

1957-1968, and today in 2017 his spirit lives on. Happy MLK Day!

Inspired by ancient traditions and the Sicilian Cart, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana have created a special Sicilian Carretto eyewear collection. With only 100 numbered pieces, the mixture of both optical and sun glasses have been individually crafted by hand; representing the definition of “One of a Kind”; as no two glasses have been decorated the same – making each one completely unique!

Made from canaletto walnut, each frame has been delicately hand-painted with images, symbols and iconography of Sicilian folk culture and history of the Italian island’s famous artistic mode of transport; the Sicilian Cart! Just like the original Sicilian Carretto, every one of the 100 limited edition pieces in the special eyewear collection, reflects Sicily’s tradition and culture through the ample use of of bright colours, multiple layers of paint, Carretto motifs and a great attention to detail!

Personally, I think this is amazing! Dolce and Gabbana have out done themselves in terms of creative inspiration, but on this occasion I have to compliment  the artists/decorators for the precision, time consumption and delicate craftsmanship. The results are truly beautiful. I only wish I could afford a pair and be one of the lucky 100! The pieces from this special eyewear collection are definitely collectable pieces, worth treasuring. Like any high-end limited edition fashion piece, I’m sure these glasses will increase in value and be considered a stylish investment!

When fashion is inspired by art and art is inspired by fashion; its just one big cycle; and it will continue to go around, then come back round again!

A contributor to the De Stijl art movement, Piet Mondrian was (and still is today), known for his abstract compositions of primary colours (red, blue and yellow) in a black grid of vertical and horizontal lines, against a white background; Mondrian !

His classic compositions were also used as backdrops in the fashion industry, before taking the catwalk in 1965 in the form of an A-line shift dress by Yves Saint Laurent. This iconic “Mondrian dress” was debuted in the Autumn/Winter ’65 season in both a jersey and wool knee length style shift dress.

Since then, similar dresses and other garments alike have been re-inspired and reproduced. Some taking the runway like the infamous YSL piece and others straight to high-street stores or street fashion.

…I love, love, love, this Chanel quilted lambskin backpack in classic black. These days I’ve been obsessed with backpacks and this Chanel checks all the boxes. Granted, it is a little on the large side, but I’m not complaining- I mean how can you not love it?!

The perfect combination of streetwear and high fashion, this is not your average drawstring bag; this is where sportswear meets fashion and I cannot get enough!

The lambskin leather backpack is designed in reflection of your traditional drawstring bag, featuring a quilted leather flap, finished with Chanel’s signature CC closure clasp and classic gold chain straps. There are also two open pockets on the back and the inside is lined with black fabric! I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again; how can you not love it?

…Also known as “Poppy Day” is a memorial day, marking the end of the First World War and in remembrance of all armed forces who have died in the line of duty (then and since). Remembrance Day is often observed at the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month (11am on the 11th of November).

Given this day (and most of the month) is often represented with a poppy; I have chosen to mark today with an appropriately fitting piece from one of my all-time favourite designers, the late and amazing; Oscar De La Renta!

Taking it back to De La Renta’s Spring/Summer collection in 2007, I couldn’t go wrong with marking today at 11:00 (along with a minute silence) with this fashion tribute. Originally designed to remember the lives lost and those affected by 9/11, this tennis inspired dress is one of many pieces from De La Renta’s S/S 07 collection; and one to which Ms Anna Wintour loved.

Staying true to the De La Renta style, he kept he collection very feminine; with gentle, flowy structures, knee-high hemlines and florals [of course!]. Also, accompanied with tennis rackets and beach bags, the models represented a true summer feel  as they strutted down the runway in September 2007. Whilst is was a light, happy and summery collection, Oscar De La Renta also wanted to acknowledge the significance of memorial day. In his notes, he wrote

Five years ago today, as I was preparing for the opening of the spring show, tragedy struck us all. Today, we honour the memory of those who died…”

Whilst he may have been talking about the American people and victims of the World Trade Centre tragedy, the imagery of the poppy is used to remember all lives lost in war and terrorism. 8 years on, Mr. De La Renta has also left this world.

R.I.P. to him and all those who have died for their country.

…And it continues. The latest snaps from The View From the Top.

…Love Love Love!

So, I decided after starting with a classic pair of Louboutins, then to a stand-out, pop colour pair of Balenciagas; my next pair of designer shoes are going to be Valentino. I mean what Fashionistas’ wardrobe is complete without a pair of Valentino heels.

Naturally, I wanted a pair of the Rocketed 100 pumps or the So Noir 100 pumps (colour undecided), however after browsing the shelves I fell in love with these bad boys; The Rockee Leather Pump. Quite obviously its the fringing that caught my eyes. But it was also the discrete, yet statement-making clear plastic strap, that drew me in even further. Not to mention the close-attention to detail; with the tiny gold (classic Valentino) studs to which neatly line both the top and underside of the buckle; that I love- this definitely completes the luxury Italian Leather shoe!

In classic black, I wonder if these gorgeous Valentino pumps will even go on sale or just have me breaking the bank! Its all just a waiting game now; will they or won’t they? #SummerSale

…Dolce and Gabbana are quite literally opening doors in the fashion world this season, through footwear and what I can only assume was inspired by art. This black Dolce & Gabbana pump features a T-bar black jacquard body with a captivating hinged heel which opens to reveal a sacred heart adorned with pearls and beading [Moda Operandi]. They certainly are an interesting pair of shoes. They look like they were designed in reflection of a fairytale or some sort of fantasy, nevertheless for that unique and quirky statement piece this Spring, they definitely do justice. So heres to the weird and wonderful heel, brought to us this SS15 by a pair of Italy’s finest; D&G!

With 10 days before Christmas, I couldn’t be more sure about what I would like from Santa this year. I mean look at it. Do you not just love it?

This Stella McCartney Falabella mini faux brushed-leather backpack is a “must have” this season. Designed in reflection in the original Falabella handbags, this luxury mini backpack is adorable. So compact, its perfect for decreasing the load and carrying less junk (that we all end up carrying, simply because we have the space to). Plus if you’re thinking about changing up you bag game; from handbag to backpack; this delicate design could not be more ideal for making the transition. Its not too small and definitely not too big. Furthermore, the slight shine from the soft faux brushed-leather makes the bag unique and stand out from your typical black leather backpacks. The iconic Stella McCartney whipstiched chains also make this bag more of a subtle statement piece and far more eye catching than any other little black backpack out there.   #lovelovelove
